1.3 GW of wind farms occupied by Russia, another 40 MW destroyed or damaged – rep of President’s Office

Some 1,300 MW out of 1,947 MW of Ukraine's wind power capacity are occupied by the Russian Federation, another 40 MW are destroyed or damaged, reported Yuriy Shafarenko, Deputy Head of the Main Department of the Directorate for Social and Economic Policy of the President’s Office.

"A total of 1,947 MW of wind power capacity has been commissioned in Ukraine. Unfortunately, more than half, namely 1,300 MW, are located in temporarily occupied territories. Another 40 MW have been destroyed or damaged. These are big losses, but Ukraine is already showing that it is not stopping," Shafarenko said during the Ukrainian Wind Energy Forum-2025 of the Ukrainian Wind Energy Association, which is currently taking place in Lviv.

According to him, approximately 200 MW of wind power plants are expected to be commissioned in 2025.

In general, the potential for wind power development in Ukraine is estimated at 100-150 GW, and according to the National Climate and Energy Plan, an additional 4 GW of wind power should be installed by 2030.

Shafarenko noted that the President’s Office considers wind energy as a key direction for the development of renewable sources in Ukraine, based, in particular, on security issues, as well as the prospects for electricity exports.

"It is wind energy that will be able to cover the destroyed part of the supply, and it also has significant export potential," he said.

Shafarenko added that the construction of a 100 MW wind farm requires the involvement of approximately 300 workers, plus dozens of people are needed for its operation.

"Wind energy is jobs, investments, community development," the President’s Office representative summarized.
