Ukrenergo aims to boost interconnector capacity and electricity imports

NPC Ukrenergo is currently working with European partners on calculating and increasing the throughput capacity of interconnectors for importing electricity from Europe, which currently amounts to 2,100 MW, the company's CEO, Vitaliy Zaichenko, said at a briefing at Ukrinform on Tuesday.

"This is what we, as the power system of Ukraine, are counting on in the most difficult periods. Currently, the capacity of interconnectors for importing electricity from Europe is 2,100 MW. We are working to increase this capacity," he said.

According to the head of Ukrenergo, the import potential is not currently being fully utilized due to damage to internal grids in the Ukrainian power system resulting from hostile attacks on energy infrastructure facilities.

"Our task and priority number one is to ensure that all 2,100 MW can be consumed by the Ukrainian power system in a critical situation," Zaichenko emphasized.

Ukraine and the EU agreed to increase the maximum capacity of electricity imports from EU countries to 2.1 GW, effective December 1, 2024.

Ukraine also has the opportunity to receive an additional 250 MW of guaranteed capacity from the EU in emergency assistance mode.

Starting in March 2025, European transmission system operators will be able to review the capacity limit for commercial electricity exchange between the EU, Ukraine, and Moldova on a monthly basis.
