Fifth of winter grain crops in Ukraine in weak condition, says weather service
The Ukrainian Weather Center says that, according to its estimates, 20% of winter grain crops sowed for harvesting in 2013 are weak.
"Twenty percent of the winter [grain] crops are in a weak condition," Tetiana Adamenko, the head of the agricultural meteorology department of the Ukrainian Weather Center, told Interfax-Ukraine.
According to her, these crops are located in Crimea, Kherson region, and some districts in Zaporizhia, Luhansk and Donetsk regions. She said that the weak development of the winter crops in the south and east of Ukraine is connected with insufficient moistening.
Yet, the weather service expects that the weather will be rainy and warm this week, which may improve the situation in the abovementioned regions.
Winter crops in the rest of Ukraine are in good condition, according to Adamenko. They have every chance of overwintering successfully, she added.
