Zelenskyy, new PM of Estonia discuss defense cooperation

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a phone conversation with the new Prime Minister of Estonia Kristen Michal on his first day of work, wishing him strength for the prosperity of his country.

"Estonia is one of our most principled allies. We are grateful that annual defense support to Ukraine remains at 0.25% of GDP. It is of a long-term strategic nature and is an excellent example for other partners," Zelenskyy said in his Telegram channel following the conversation.

According to the president, Michal assured him of continued support for Ukraine on its path to the EU and NATO.

The parties also discussed the continuation of cooperation, including between defense companies of both countries, and agreed to meet at the first opportunity.

"On my first day in office, spoke with Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Thank you, dear Volodymyr, for your warm wishes. Estonia's support for Ukraine is unwavering. Your victory is our shared goal. European security is at stake," the Prime Minister said on X social media.

Michal said they will continue to give 0.25% of GDP to Ukraine in military aid.

On July 23, the new Estonian government was sworn in at an extraordinary session of parliament on Tuesday, and the cabinet of ministers is now considered to have taken office.

The Cabinet of Ministers was headed by Kristen Michal, a board member of the leading ruling Reform party. Previously, in different government structures, he held the posts of Minister of Climate, Economy and Infrastructure, and Justice. He was repeatedly elected as a member of parliament.

The new government was formed in connection with the resignation of Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, who became a candidate for the post of High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. According to Estonian legislation, with the resignation of the prime minister, the entire previous government also resigned. The new coalition will consist, like the previous one, of the same three parties: Reform, Social Democrats and Estonia 200.

In the future government, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur, Interior Minister Lauri Laanemets and most other heads of departments will retain their posts.
