UNHCR allocates $30 mln to support frontline regions

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) will provide Ukraine with $30 million, thanks to which residents of nine frontline regions will be able to receive one-time assistance in the amount of UAH 21,000 for the purchase of solid household fuel, the Ministry of Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories reported.

"On August 21, 2024, the Ministry of Reintegration and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) signed a memorandum on support for frontline communities during the upcoming winter period... The memorandum provides for one-time payments of UAH 21,000 for vulnerable households to purchase solid household fuel," the ministry said on Telegram on Wednesday.

It is reported that the total budget of the program is $30 million, the assistance will cover vulnerable households in Sumy, Kharkiv, Kherson, Luhansk, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhia, Mykolaiv and Chernihiv regions. First of all, the matter concerns households within 10 km from the contact line or from the border with the Russian Federation.

The document was signed by Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Iryna Vereschuk and UNHCR Representative in Ukraine Karolina Lindholm Billing.

"UNHCR's priority is to support people who remain in frontline areas during the winter months, which are likely to be particularly difficult this year given the targeted attacks on energy infrastructure. These people are in an incredibly vulnerable socio-economic situation and therefore most in need of humanitarian assistance to survive and maintain their resilience," said the UNHCR representative in Ukraine.

The report notes that the $30 million provided by UNHCR is part of a larger aid package. Its total amount is $100 million.
