Moldovan President Sandu, 9 other contenders file documents to be registered as presidential election candidates
Incumbent Moldovan President Maia Sandu of the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) on Thursday submitted documents to the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) to obtain the registration of her support group for running in the presidential election on October 20, the CEC said.
On Thursday, the CEC also received documents from Renato Usatii, chairman of Our Party; Igor Munteanu, chairman of the Coalition for Unity and Prosperity party; Irina Vlah, former head of the autonomous territorial unit of Gagauzia; and former Foreign Minister Tudor Ulianovschi, an unaffiliated candidate, to have their support groups registered.
On Wednesday, the CEC received such documents from former Prime Minister Ion Chicu of the Party of Development and Consolidation; former Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev, an unaffiliated candidate; former Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo, an unaffiliated candidate supported by the Party of Socialists; former Defense Minister Valeriu Plesca of the European Social-Democratic Party; and former parliamentarian Octavian Ticu of the Together electoral bloc.
A total of ten contenders have submitted documents to be registered as presidential candidates over the past two days.
Seventeen people have earlier declared their desire to run for president in Moldova.
The official nomination and registration of candidates to run for president in Moldova in elections set for October 20 began on August 21. Along with the presidential election, Moldovan citizens will also vote in a constitutional referendum.
