EU Ambassador Mathernová notes Ukraine's progress in reforms despite war
European Union Ambassador to Ukraine Katarína Mathernová, who has been the head of the European delegation for exactly a year, noted Kyiv's progress in reforms despite the fight against Russian aggression.
"Well, actually, today is the first anniversary of my arrival in Kyiv to take up the post. Shortly after that, I submitted my credentials to President Zelenskyy. Since then, it’s been a whirlwind. A lot has happened, notably, in Ukraine-EU relations," the ambassador said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine.
Mathernová noted many important events during this period, in particular, on December 14, EU leaders made a historic decision to begin negotiations with Ukraine on joining the European Union, and in June, an intergovernmental conference began, within which Ukraine and the European Union officially began negotiations on membership.
The ambassador also recalled that right now, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister for Euro-Atlantic and European Integration - Minister of Justice Olha Stefanishyna is in Brussels with her team to participate in a screening, within which the practice of Ukrainian legislative institutions is compared with EU norms and rules.
"And so the trend in the relationship between Ukraine and the EU on European integration is positive," the ambassador said.
She also stressed that despite the hot war with casualties, killed and wounded, Ukraine continues to implement reforms and makes progress.
"Therefore, it’s all the more remarkable the reform progress and continuation on the reform path that is necessary for EU integration that is happening while fighting the war," the ambassador said.
