Ambassador of the European Union to Ukraine Katarína Mathernová believes that now, in particular, after the start of the Kursk operation by Ukrainian soldiers, in many circles there is awareness that the next six months could be decisive and that support for Ukraine needs to be strengthened.

"I think it [Kursk operation] was very much noticed, it was surprising to most, and I think there is now a realization in many quarters that the next half year may be decisive, and it’s now time to strengthen support for Ukraine," the ambassador said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

Mathernová also supported the need to lift restrictions on Ukraine’s ability to carry out long-range strikes on military targets on Russian territory.

"I do believe. And let me refer you to my boss, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, who has said repeatedly publicly that Ukraine needs to be able to effectively defend itself. And that means being able to strike military targets in Russia where the attacks originate, and so I do hope that there will be a relaxation of the restrictions," the ambassador said.
