Trump always results-oriented, possible and necessary to work effectively with him - Poroshenko on U.S. elections
Never have the elections in the United States been as important for Ukrainians as in 2024, Petro Poroshenko said on the air of the Pryamiy TV channel.
He stressed that the key task is to maintain bipartisan support for Ukraine.
Petro Poroshenko noted that in no case should the Ukrainian issue be allowed to become part of the U.S. domestic policy and the subject of conflicts between Democrats and Republicans, the Ukrainian issue should unite and in these conditions, of course, parliamentary diplomacy is key.
He stressed that Donald Trump is a leader who primarily strives for results and evaluates not statements, but specific actions.
"The changes will occur in the fact that Ukraine must finally learn to take the lion's share of responsibility on itself. This also concerns Europe. Europe must take a significant part of the responsibility for security on the continent on itself. This poses very important new tasks for us. Both Ukraine and Europe have not worked like this. And we will have to learn," Poroshenko noted.
He also recalled that it was during Trump's first presidential term that Ukraine received American lethal weapons Javelins, boats, counter-battery radars and other equipment.
"I would like to recall the decisive actions of President Trump to stop the construction of Nord Stream 2. It was Trump who imposed sanctions on companies involved in the construction. And this stopped the construction of Nord Stream for a while," Poroshenko said.
"Trump supported the Minsk agreements, he appointed special representative of the U.S. president Kurt Volker, who worked in close coordination with representatives of the European Union and played a huge role in avoiding a full-scale war during my term," Poroshenko said.
"It was with Trump that we first negotiated the supply of Patriot air defense systems and Apache attack helicopters to us. It was with Trump that we discussed the need for the Orthodox Church of Ukraine to obtain autocephaly," Poroshenko said.
"Trump is always results-oriented. Trump may not read the briefing that is prepared for him, because he trusts his intuition very much. But at the same time, you can work effectively with Trump. But not with conversations, not with summits, not with family photos, not with declarations and especially not with ultimatums. Trump definitely does not perceive this. Ukraine must now build its strategy and tactics of relations with the United States differently. There will no longer be a turning away of planes before the NATO summit. It worked because it was respect and horror in the face of the tragedies of Bucha, Hostomel, Borodianka, Mariupol, footage that would shock any normal person," explained Petro Poroshenko.
"Emotions are not a component of Trump. I can say that two words that he loves very much are result and action. You can achieve a result if you are very well prepared. And secondly, if you do your part of the homework," Poroshenko noted.
