Ukraine capable of developing nuclear weapons within few months

Ukraine has the capacity to create its own nuclear weapons within a few months, The Times reports, citing documents prepared for the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.

According to the publication, Ukraine can quickly develop a simple nuclear bomb if Donald Trump, as U.S. President, withdraws military aid.

In particular, we are talking about creating a basic device from plutonium using technology similar to the Fat Man bomb dropped on Nagasaki in 1945.

"Creating a simple atomic bomb, as the United States did within the framework of the Manhattan Project, would not be a difficult task 80 years," according to the document.

It is noted that Ukraine would most likely have to use plutonium extracted from spent fuel rods of nuclear reactors in order not to waste time on the construction and operation of large facilities needed to enrich uranium.

As reported, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during a conversation with U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on September 27 that he discussed Ukraine's membership in NATO.

Zelenskyy explained that the Budapest Memorandum, in order to guarantee the territorial integrity and sovereignty of independent Ukraine within internationally recognized borders, included a condition for Ukraine to renounce nuclear weapons. He said Russia violated this document, and it does not work, in addition, the agreements of other major partners with Russia do not work.

"And in a conversation with Donald Trump, I told him that this is how it turns out for us. What is the way out? Either Ukraine will have nuclear weapons, and then this will be our defense, or we must have some kind of alliance. Apart from NATO, today we do not know of any active alliances," the president said.

He later denied claims that Ukraine was preparing to develop nuclear weapons "or anything like that."
