FM: Ukraine urgently needs additional air defense systems to protect 19 energy facilities, list of needs already sent to allies
Ukraine urgently needs an additional 19 air defense systems to protect certain Ukrainian strategic energy facilities, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha said.
"We urgently need an additional 19 air defense systems to protect certain of our strategic energy facilities. We are confident that with the help of our allies, we will survive the winter, having received these systems for the proper protection of these 19 facilities," Sybiha said during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Brussels, an Interfax-Ukraine correspondent reports.
According to the head of Ukrainian diplomacy, Ukraine has already sent a specific list of needs.
"We hope that one of the tangible results of our discussions today and in the coming days will also be a decision by our closest partners on the urgent delivery of these air defense systems," Sybiha said.
The minister reiterated that Ukraine needs "strong decisions" to strengthen Ukrainian capabilities, which will be discussed with close allies. Sybiha pointed out that Russia is trying to "turn energy into a weapon."
"They are trying to cut us off from nuclear energy. They have started attacking nuclear energy facilities. This is also a new reality of this Russian aggression," the minister said.
He added "that is why we need strong historical decisions instead of calling Putin or visiting Moscow."
Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Sybiha, who arrived at NATO headquarters in Brussels, said that he would raise the issue of the urgent delivery of at least 20 additional air defense systems such as HAWK, NASAM or IRIS-T.
A meeting of the foreign ministers of the Alliance member countries is taking place at NATO headquarters in Brussels (Belgium) on December 3-4.
