PM: Estonia's defense support for Ukraine reaches almost EUR 542 mln

Estonia's defense support for Ukraine has reached almost EUR 542 million, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal has said.

"We held constructive talks on a wide range of issues and outlined our joint positions... I am grateful for the large-scale defense support from Estonia, which has already reached almost EUR 542 million or 1.4% of the country's GDP. Estonia's decision to annually allocate no less than 0.25% of its GDP for Ukraine's defense was significant," Shmyhal said at a joint briefing with Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal in Kyiv on Monday.

In turn, Michal said the decision to provide 0.25% of GDP for Ukraine's defense is the country's obligation.

"This will mean that Ukraine will receive EUR 100 million from us annually. We are trying to encourage our partners and allies to do the same," the head of the Estonian government said.

He also said European and other partners should strengthen their defense capabilities in the production of ammunition for Ukraine.

In turn, the Ukrainian Prime Minister noted that Estonia is also actively involved in the restoration of Ukraine, in particular, it was the first to declare patronage over Zhytomyr region.

In addition, he said Ukraine appreciates Estonia's contribution to Ukraine's energy resilience.

"Only through the EU civil protection mechanism, Estonia has provided us with more than 140 transformers and more than 300 units of energy equipment. We received significant support at the level of the state, regions, municipalities, and the private sector," Shmyhal said.

The Prime Minister said it is important that Estonia announced a contribution of EUR 400,000 to Ukraine Energy Support Fund.

"In the near future, a power unit from an Estonian power plant will be delivered to Ukraine, it will be able to provide electricity to 150,000 people. We are also discussing the transfer of two more power units in 2025," he said.

Shmyhal said that following the meeting, the parties signed a joint statement.
