SBU detains Belarusian KGB agent spying on northern border of Ukraine

Counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine thwarted the plans of the Belarusian special services to obtain intelligence data on the defense of Ukraine’s northern border: a Belarusian KGB agent who was spying on the Ukrainian troops was detained in Volyn.

In the Telegram channel on Monday, the SBU reported that a 24-year-old local unemployed man, hoping for money from Belarusian special services, agreed to carry out their tasks.

"Among the main ones is monitoring the locations of checkpoints and fortified areas of the Defense Forces on the northern border of Ukraine. Also, on behalf of the KGB, the suspect tried to detect military trains moving along local tracks or at transit stations of Ukrzaliznytsia," the SBU noted.

According to the Ukrainian special services, in order to collect intelligence, the agent went around the area, where he recorded the fortifications of the Defense Forces and marked their geolocations on Google maps.

SBU officers exposed the suspect in advance, documented his crimes and detained him at his place of residence.

During a search of the detainee's home, a phone with an anonymous chat in the messenger, which he used to contact a Belarusian special service officer, was seized. His identity has already been established by the SBU's counterintelligence.

According to the report, during the special operation, the bases and logistical routes of the Ukrainian defenders were additionally secured.

Based on the collected evidence, the Security Service investigators informed the agent of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason committed under martial law).

The perpetrator is in custody.

The special operation was conducted by SBU officers in Volyn region under the procedural guidance of the regional prosecutor's office.
