Ukrainians abroad will wait to obtain multiple citizenship until mobilization is over - UWC President

2 min read

The President of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) Paul Grod believes that many Ukrainians abroad will wait to receive multiple citizenship until the end of the general mobilization.

"I will say frankly, and this is a rather delicate question - this is about military service. There are many Ukrainians who will probably wait to receive multiple citizenship until there is mobilization. Because frankly, even I myself, born in Canada, accepting Ukrainian citizenship today is difficult, because then it will be difficult for me to leave Ukraine. This is for reasons that are a little problematic today, but over time this will be corrected," Grod said at a briefing on Tuesday, answering a question about the challenges of introducing multiple citizenship in Ukraine.

He stressed that today this is one of the major barriers to acquiring multiple citizenship.

As reported, on June 18, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law on multiple citizenship, which simplifies the procedure for obtaining Ukrainian citizenship.

The law provides for the legalization of foreign citizenship, as well as the right to obtain foreign citizenship without renouncing Ukrainian citizenship. According to the law, citizens of other countries can become citizens of Ukraine by ethnic origin under a shortened procedure. The law also provides for a shortened procedure for obtaining citizenship in the event that a foreigner has completed military service in Ukraine. The law prohibits civil servants and judges from having multiple citizenship. According to the law, a person who has a passport of another state, but is a citizen of Ukraine, is recognized only as a Ukrainian citizen on the territory of Ukraine.

On July 15, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed the law on multiple citizenship.
