Ukraine’s Embassy in Poland is in contact with Polish authorities, monitors situation surrounding Nawrocki's veto of law on aid to Ukrainians

The Embassy of Ukraine in Poland has published a clarification in connection with reports of country's President Karol Nawrocki vetoing amendments to the special law on assistance to Ukrainians.

"The special law in Poland is valid until September 30, 2025. The temporary protection regime for persons displaced from Ukraine was extended by the EU Council Decision until March 4, 2027; it remains valid on the territory of the Republic of Poland," the message says.

The embassy emphasized that the decisions of the EU Council on temporary protection binding for all EU member states, including Poland, are subject to direct application, and their implementation is ensured by national legislation, in particular the Special Law.

The Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Poland emphasizes that it monitors the development of the situation, is in constant contact with the Polish authorities and will inform Ukrainian citizens about official decisions in a timely manner.

"We recommend that Ukrainian citizens refrain from hasty decisions, in particular regarding changing their legal status in the Republic of Poland. Each individual situation requires a separate consultation with a lawyer for a comprehensive analysis of possible legal options," the embassy said.

President Karol Nawrocki announced on Monday that he had not signed an amendment to the law on assistance to citizens of Ukraine. He motivated his decision, in particular, by the fact that only Ukrainians working in Poland should receive the 800+ assistance. He also announced a legislative initiative that would equate the "Bandera symbol" with Nazi and communist symbols in the criminal code.
