Trump petitions Supreme Court to freeze foreign aid funding - media

The administration of US President Donald Trump has filed an urgent appeal with the Supreme Court on Wednesday, asking it to allow billions of dollars in foreign aid to remain frozen, the Associated Press hasreported.

The Justice Department filed the urgent appeal, demanding swift intervention to block lower court rulings that allowed funding to continue, including for programs in the field of global health and the fight against HIV and AIDS.

The Supreme Court has already rejected the Trump administration on this issue this year, according to the publication, but then the decision was made by a narrow margin of 5 to 4. The justices have recently sided with the administration in several high-profile cases.

"The Republican administration says it's about $12 billion that will need to be spent by September 30 if the lower court rulings remain in effect. They say the judge's March order mandating continued funding illegally interferes with negotiations between the president and Congress on spending cuts," the report says.
