UN Coordinator in Ukraine assures of continued support for modernization of Ukrainian agriculture
UN Coordinator in Ukraine and Humanitarian Coordinator Matthias Schmale assured of continued support for the restoration and modernization of Ukrainian agriculture.
He said at a joint briefing of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the founding of the FAO on Monday, that in addition to continuing humanitarian assistance – including providing food to those in need or offering financial support for the purchase of food in Ukraine – he promised on behalf of the UN that they would continue to do everything possible to support Ukraine in the restoration and modernization of its agriculture.
In particular, Schmale believes that the UN should continue to support Ukraine in helping to prepare fields for agricultural production through effective mine action.
This needs to continue, he stressed.
Secondly, as the coordinator added, it is important to support farmers in restoring their agricultural economy not only by providing access to seeds and tools, but also directly with financing and expertise.
The UN coordinator said that, in his opinion, the creation of unified agricultural centers is a good idea. He added that the UN can also work with the government and other stakeholders to share experiences and best practices on the effective development and modernization of agricultural policies from around the world. The organization emphasized that, for the sake of Ukraine’s citizens as well as people in need around the world, there is a need for a strong and competitive agricultural sector in Ukraine.
