I believe we will achieve the goal, we just need more time - Rubio
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking at the second briefing on the results of the Ukrainian-American talks in Geneva, said that he believes in the development of a compromise agreement based on the peace plan proposed by the US. This was reported by Sky News on Sunday.
Rubio held this briefing for journalists alone.
"I am very optimistic that we can do something here, because we have made tremendous progress," Rubio told reporters.
"I don’t want to declare victory or finality. There is still some work to be done, but today we are much further than we were when we started this morning, and where we were a week ago, that’s for sure," Rubio added.
According to the Secretary of State, Trump is now "quite pleased" with Ukraine, despite his previous comments criticizing gratitude for US peacekeeping efforts. Rubio also made it clear that Trump’s deadline of next Thursday is unlikely to be met, but he hopes a deal can be reached "soon."
"We just need more time than we have today. I truly believe we will get there," Rubio told a briefing. He also said that some of the points of contention are semantics or language, while others require "higher-level" decisions or consultations.
Asked about European counterproposals, Rubio said he "hasn’t seen any counterplan."
