Winter crops have good chance of overwintering well, delivering strong harvest – Ukrainian Weather Center
Winter crops sown in Ukraine for the 2026 harvest have every chance of overwintering without problems and delivering a strong yield, according to Tetiana Adamenko, head of the agrometeorology department at the Ukrainian Weather Center.
"The future harvest is very likely to be intact. Farmers received a weather bonus, especially those who completed late sowing. In October, and particularly in November, we saw abnormally warm weather… plus the rains that arrived in October and September. They allowed plants to reach certain development stages that will help them survive the winter," she said during a discussion hosted by the Center for Economic Strategy.
Adamenko noted that winter risks for agricultural crops still remain. It is entirely possible that during the winter there could be five to seven days of severe frost, which may lead to certain yield losses.
In addition, she said the yield of winter crops for the 2026 harvest may be higher because Ukraine currently faces minimal risks of winterkill and crop loss during the winter season, given global warming.
"Practically everything that has been sown will form next year's harvest after vegetation resumes, meaning we will not see significant winter losses," the Weather Center representative assured.
