Zelenskyy: Ukraine's EU accession date is conversation between USA and Ukraine, without European confirmation yet

The date of Ukraine's accession to the European Union has been discussed between Ukraine and the United States without confirmation from the European side as of today, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the seventh point of the draft plan to end the Russian-Ukrainian war, which envisages that Ukraine will become an EU member at a specific time and will receive short-term privileged access to the European market.

"The accession dates for Ukraine today are a bilateral conversation between America and Ukraine without any European confirmation yet. We are talking about the fact that we want to have a specific date for joining the EU, that this is the right security guarantee, and in general we feel that America supports this," Zelenskyy said during a meeting with journalists on Tuesday.

The president explained that Ukraine considers EU membership to be a mandatory security guarantee, even if they come into force in one or several years. "Membership in the European Union is also the acquisition of part of our security guarantees, and therefore we want to fix the date when this will happen. For example, it is 2027 or 2028 – there must be some specifics, because without specifics, a security guarantee does not look like a real security guarantee," Zelenskyy said.
