New oily slicks detected in the Black Sea – Center for Countering Disinformation
New oily slicks have been detected in the Black Sea waters within Odesa district and in the territory of the Tuzly Lagoons National Nature Park, the Center for Countering Disinformation under Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council reported.
According to the Center, the slicks were caused by damage to tanks containing sunflower oil near the Adzhalyk estuary by Russian drones in late December 2025.
"As a result, part of the oil entered the sea. In the Tuzly Lagoons area, national park staff are currently recording contamination over an area of about 10,000 square meters. Despite the fact that most of the oil mass eventually polymerized and settled on the bottom of the Odesa Gulf, its film on the surface restricts oxygen access and complicates respiration for marine organisms. During the last storm, this caused a mass die-off of crabs," the Center said on its Telegram channel.
The Center described the incident as "another act of environmental terror" by Russia in the Black Sea.
"Attacks on ports, civilian industrial and logistics facilities create not only threats to human life but also destroy the ecosystem, the consequences of which extend far beyond the battlefield," the Center added.
