Prosecutor General at EU Justice Council meeting: We strive to ensure high European standards

Ukraine strives to ensure compliance with the highest European standards necessary for cooperation in the field of mutual legal assistance and extradition, Ukrainian Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin said.

In the Telegram channel on Wednesday, the Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) said Kostin in Brussels (Belgium) took part in a meeting of the EU Council on Justice and Home Affairs together with European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders and the ministers of justice of the EU countries.

"Strengthening legal cooperation is important for Ukraine on the path to EU membership," the PGO said.

Kostin briefed his colleagues about the progress made by Ukraine in strengthening the protection of human rights, which is a key element for ensuring extradition from European countries.

In particular, the prosecutor general said Ukraine is taking a comprehensive approach in this direction: reconstructing prisons, introducing legislative and regulatory changes aimed at increasing the effectiveness of torture prevention, and improving monitoring of the rights of prisoners in cooperation with international partners and civil society organizations.

"We are actively adapting the system to wartime conditions. Currently, the majority of people in the country's prisons have access to air-raid shelters. Ukraine is committed to ensuring compliance with the highest European standards necessary for cooperation in the field of mutual legal assistance and extradition," Kostin said.

"Our goal is to bring all criminals to justice, wherever they are," he said.

Kostin thanked his EU colleagues for supporting Ukraine's European choice and the fight for justice.
