Allowing Ukraine to strike at Russian territory may be expanded, will depend on battlefield situation – White House

The White House did not rule out that allowing Ukraine to strike with American weapons at targets in Russia could be expanded, and noted that this would depend on the situation on the battlefield, Voice of America reports.

“We’ll have those talks, we’ll have those conversations with the Ukrainians. Absolutely, we will. And whether it leads to any additional policy changes, I can’t say at this point, but we’re not going to turn our back on what Ukraine needs. And we’re going to continue to try to, again, evolve our support to them as the battlefield evolves as well,” White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby said a briefing on June 3.

At the same time, he noted that he won’t get ahead “of decisions that haven’t been made.”

“As you well know, every step of this war — as the war has evolved, the battlefield conditions have changed, we have evolved and we have changed our support to Ukraine. And that’s — I wouldn’t expect that that general approach is going to be any different in coming weeks and months. We’ll see where things go and what the Ukrainians need,” Kirby noted.

As reported, on May 31, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, in a conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, welcomed the recent U.S. decision allowing Ukraine to better defend itself from Russian attacks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed receipt on Friday morning of a U.S. permit for the limited use of American weapons on the territory of the Russian Federation, but did not disclose other details.
