Ukrainian Wind Energy Association calls for separate state agency for renewable energy development

The Ukrainian Wind Energy Association (UWEA) has proposed creating a dedicated state body or division focused exclusively on renewable energy development, according to UWEA Chairman Andriy Konechenkov.

"We believe it's crucial to establish an agency specifically tasked with advancing green energy. This is essential because we have a national plan for renewable energy development under our climate strategy, numerous commitments to the EU, yet no single body to drive these strategic goals," Konechenkov said during a UWEA press conference at Interfax-Ukraine on Thursday.

Konechenkov said that the renewable energy sector reached this conclusion due to significant demand for such projects across various industries. However, without proactive state-level support, progress remains slow, he added.

Konechenkov mentioned that discussions about the initiative are just beginning, making it too early to predict government or Energy Ministry support.

As reported, the UWEA chairman said at the press conference that 2024 was a challenging year for wind energy, with only 20 MW of new wind power capacity commissioned – more than 10 times less than the 248 MW installed in 2023. Key obstacles included legislative gaps and outstanding debts to feed-in tariff investors, now estimated at UAH 35-38 billion.
