3 min read

Ukraine has a rich cultural heritage, which includes many traditional crafts that have survived to our time despite the prohibition. Here are ten the best Ukrainian art traditions, which the "Lihtaryk" art studio invites you to join:

1. Pysankarstvo. The art of Easter egg painting, which uses complicated patterns and symbols that vary by region. Ornaments for Easter eggs can symbolize the sun, water, plants (tree of life) and animals. Traditionally, Easter eggs were written only by women, but now there are no such gender restrictions.

2. Pottery. Traditional production of ceramic products from clay. Ceramic products have been used for storage since ancient times in various countries. In addition to tableware, potters made tiles, children's toys and plinth (a kind of brick). The most famous art centers are located in Opishnia and Kosiv.

4. Samchykivka painting. This style of decorative painting originated in Khmelnytskyi. A feature of this painting is large, bright flowers: periwinkles, sunflowers, roses, poppies, and others. In addition, just as in pysankarstvo and embroidery, the symbol of the tree of life is present in Samchykivka.

5. Motanka dolls. Traditionally Ukrainian dolls are made from fabric without the use of needles, which have a symbolic meaning. They were often made by women for their children as the first toys. In addition, Motanka was made for a ritual purpose. For instance, for using in a wedding ceremony.

6. Candle making. Handworking of rolled candles from natural wax. Such candles were used both in everyday life and in some ceremonial traditions. In many cultures, and in Ukrainian in particular, candles symbolize light and purity. Currently, using of "honey candles" is appreciated because of their environmental friendliness.

7. Vybiyka (stamp pressing technique) is one of the oldest techniques of fabric decoration by manually stamping a pattern on the fabric using wooden stamps. Patterns can be very diverse: plant, animal or geometric.

8. Mosaic is an ancient technique that has been widespread on our territory ever since the construction of Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv. The basis of the technique is laying out images with colorful pebbles, smalt or ceramic tiles.

9. Embroidery is probably the most iconic tradition for Ukrainians. Over the past decades, embroidered shirts have become an integral part of the wardrobe of Ukrainians. Ukrainian embroidery is known for its bright ornaments. Now, in addition to traditional patterns, numerous stylizations are also popular.

10. Carpet making. Weaving carpets and tapestries with unique Ukrainian ornaments and symbols especially widespread in the western regions of Ukraine. At the beginning of the 20th century, many avant-garde artists collected Ukrainian carpets and were inspired by folk art to create their own modern works.
