Szijjártó reaffirms Hungary's position on Russia-Ukraine war, commitment to continue humanitarian support for Ukrainians
Minister for Foreign Affairs and Economy of Hungary Péter Szijjártó said during talks with his Ukrainian counterpart Andriy Sybiha that Budapest supports all initiatives aimed at "achieving peace as soon as possible" in Ukraine, but reaffirmed his country's commitment to further humanitarian support for Ukrainians and participation in the country's restoration.
"This meeting gave me the opportunity to reiterate to the minister that Hungary continues to take a pro-peace stance on the Russian-Ukrainian war. I also confirmed that Hungary is looking for the shortest path to peace in the war that has lasted for almost a thousand days. We support and seek a solution that can end the suffering of hundreds of thousands and millions of people and families as soon as possible," he said at a joint press conference with Sybiha on Monday.
Szijjártó also reiterated that Hungary supports all international initiatives that "carry an opportunity of achieving peace as soon as possible." The Hungarian minister said that Budapest supports all initiatives that "give hope that this war can be diplomatically ended through negotiations as soon as possible."
He also told Sybiha that Hungary will continue "the largest humanitarian operation in its history as long as it is necessary to help Ukrainians in a difficult situation."
According to the minister, the number of people who have arrived in Hungary from Ukraine fleeing the war has exceeded 1.4 million, and Hungary provided 14,855 Ukrainian children with the opportunity to attend a summer camp.
"In total, to date we have spent HUF 66 billion from the budget to help Ukraine," Szijjártó said.
He also confirmed that Hungary is ready to participate in the restoration of Ukraine.
"We have participated and continue to take part in the work needed to restore the functioning of educational, medical and administrative institutions," the minister said.
