Implementation of long-term cross-section distribution auctions for electricity import-export depends on ENTSO-E – Ukrenergo
Ukrenergo is in constant negotiations with the network of system operators of continental Europe ENTSO-E regarding the introduction of long-term auctions for distribution of interstate cross-section for import-export of electricity, on which this decision depends, and hopes for its adoption, said the company's director of legal affairs, Maksym Yurkov.
"This is one of our ongoing strategic tasks that we are trying to solve. Unfortunately, we cannot start long-term auctions for cross-section distribution only on our own initiative. It is necessary for the system operators of neighboring countries to support this. We are constantly negotiating, we have corresponding expectations, we are trying to stimulate such auctions as soon as possible," Yurkov said in a commentary to the Energy Reform online portal on the sidelines of the IX Business & Legal Energy Forum in Kyiv on Wednesday.
He explained that on the Ukrenergo platform, where joint auctions with Romania are held, long-term auctions can be started immediately after the decision is made by European transmission system operators. As for the JAO platform, where auctions are held with Poland, Slovakia and Hungary, certain procedures will have to be completed on the European side, after which it will be possible to switch to long-term distribution.
"For what exact period these long-term auctions will be, this is a question of the readiness of our partners," the expert noted.
As reported, with the start of the Russian full-scale invasion, ENTSO-E, due to war risks, agreed only to daily auctions for the distribution of interstate capacity for import-export operations with electricity. At the same time, traders and energy companies have repeatedly noted that the lack of long-term auctions, in particular monthly and annual ones, hinders the efficiency of attracting imported electricity.
