European Solidarity faction proposes to create ad hoc inquiry panel on Okhmatdyt restoration

The European Solidarity faction proposes the Verkhovna Rada to set up an ad hoc inquiry panel on the restoration of the Okhmatdyt National Specialized Children's Hospital in Kyiv.

"We will demand the setting up of an ad hoc inquiry panel after the tender is held to control the funds for the restoration of Okhmatdyt. We will demand that this ad hoc inquiry panel is chaired by a representative of the opposition, because it will be the opposition's tool," Ukrainian MP Maria Ionova, who is also a representative of the hospital's board of trustees, said at a press briefing on Thursday.

The faction also called on the authorities to refrain from politicizing and delaying the restoration the Okhmatdyt hospital, as well as from putting pressure on the medical personnel for voicing the institution's problems.

The founder of the Hospitallers volunteer medical battalion, MP Yana Zinkevych, who is also the secretary of the Verkhovna Rada's relevant committee, stressed that a very large amount of money has been raised for the restoration of Okhmatdyt and it is dramatically important to use them effectively and properly.

"We can see that embezzlement is possible. What the authorities have planned – a years-long restoration – will result into the medical personnel simply getting dispersed. They will go to other medical institutions, because they have nowhere to work," she said.

Zinkevych also noted that every postponed day of the hospital's recovery is a risk of losing children's lives.

"The next week is a plenary one. We will demand a report from [Health] Minister [of Ukraine Viktor] Liashko on the situation at Okhmatdyt and the setting up of a commission that would transparently control what is going on with this hospital. And we will do the utmost to make it work as soon as possible," the co-chairperson of the European Solidarity faction, Iryna Gerashchenko, said.
