Since early 2024 some 20 MW of new wind power capacity launched, 24 MW of used turbines imported in Ukraine– Head of UWEA

Since the beginning of 2024, up to 20 MW of new wind power capacity has been launched in Ukraine, and 24 MW of used wind turbines have been imported, said Andriy Konechenkov, Chairman of the Ukrainian Wind Energy Association (UWEA), at a press conference at Interfax-Ukraine on Thursday.

"Despite the ongoing war, companies remain interested in further developing the wind energy sector. However, I would still call 2024 a disappointing year," Konechenkov stated.

According to him, in comparison to 2023, when 238 MW of new wind generation capacity was brought online, only four turbines have been connected to the grid this year: two 5.5 MW turbines by Eco Optima LLC and two 4.8 MW turbines at the Ostrovsky Wind Park by Wind Parks of Ukraine LLC.

Konechenkov noted that during the war, the market for importing used turbines has seen significant growth. Specifically, since the start of 2024, Ukraine has received and installed 13 used turbines with a total capacity of 24 MW. This contrasts with the previous eight years, during which only 43 MW of used turbines were imported in total.

"The only problem is that when such turbines are brought to Ukraine, they are not always properly refurbished… the major point is that without supplier guarantees or additional spare parts, turbines from unknown or defunct companies may occupy space in Ukraine but fail to function effectively," he said.
