Blinken, Ukrainian FM discuss energy assistance

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha discussed on Friday the U.S. readiness to help strengthen the Ukrainian energy sector this coming winter, the U.S. State Department said.

"The two discussed the commitment of U.S. and partner assistance to strengthen the resilience of Ukraine’s energy sector this winter," the State Department said in a statement.

Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in helping Ukraine in the energy sector before the coming winter, the EU would act "in three areas: repair, connection and stabilization" with the goal of restoring 2.5 GW of energy capacity.

According to the head of the European Commission, 80% of thermal power plants and a third of Ukraine's hydroelectric capacity have been destroyed.

Von der Leyen also said all possible support from EU member states through the civil protection mechanism would continue.
