Parliament backs draft law on medical payments for freed military captives

The Parliamentary Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence has recommended that the Verkhovna Rada adopt in the first reading a bill on payments for treatment to military personnel released from captivity, committee member Iryna Friz (European Solidarity faction) has said.

"The Committee on National Security has recommended that the Verkhovna Rada support as a basis the draft law (No. 13627) on payments to military personnel released from captivity who have diseases requiring long-term inpatient treatment," Friz told Interfax-Ukraine after the committee meeting on Wednesday.

According to the MP, the bill provides for the provision of military personnel released from captivity with an additional monthly remuneration of UAH 50,000 for three months of treatment. She noted that according to the bill, this norm applies to inpatient, outpatient treatment and rehabilitation.

"The payment will cover treatment required due to injuries (disfigurement, trauma, contusion) or diseases that were acquired or aggravated during captivity. Persons who surrendered to captivity voluntarily or committed a crime against Ukraine will not be entitled to payments," Friz said.

According to her, such payments should not be limited to three months, as rehabilitation or treatment often lasts longer. She added that she intends to make this amendment when preparing the bill for the second reading.

According to the parliament's website, bill No. 13627 on amendments to certain laws regarding payments to servicemen released from captivity who have diseases requiring long-term inpatient treatment was registered in the Verkhovna Rada on August 14.
